Proposal for Russian Premier League and Russian Cup reforms announced

print version

A majority of Russian Premier League clubs voted in favour of expanding the RPL from 16 to 18 clubs at the General Meeting yesterday. The final decision is subject to Executive Committee of the Russian Football Union.

The Russian Cup has come under review as well. Pryadkin was disappointed by the performance of RPL clubs in the competition two seasons ago when 10 of the 16 sides were knocked out at their first hurdle after fielding weakened teams.

“Some things are conceptual, which we will solve with the RFU,” said Pryadkin. “These are not the final changes to the tournament. But the framework is already there.”
