Matchday 16 fixtures to begin with minute of silence in memory of Diego Maradona

print version

All Russian Premier Liga teams will observe a minute’s silence in memory of Argentine football player Diego Maradona, who died on 25 November.

During his playing career, Maradona played in Argentina, Spain and Italy. With Boca Juniors, he won the Argentine championship, with Barcelona he won the Spanish Cup and League Cup, and with Napoli he became two-time Italian champion and winner of the UEFA Cup. Together with the Argentine national team, Maradona won the 1986 FIFA World Cup, and his goal against England in the quarter-finals of that tournament was recognized by FIFA as the best goal of the 20th century.

As a coach, Maradona has worked in Argentina, the United Arab Emirates and Mexico, and also led the Argentine national team at the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Since September 2019 he had been coaching Gimnasia La Plata in his homeland.
