Second edition of annual futsal tournament Hero-Cities Cup will be held in St.Petersburg in the period between 23 and 25 January 2015. 12 teams will participate in the event: two teams from Leningrad (St.Petersburg), three teams from Moscow, each of the following towns will be represented by one team: Sevastopol, Kerch, Smolensk, Volgograd, Tula, Minsk and Brest.
The decision to launch the first edition of such tournament was taken at the end of 2013. All-Russian Fan Union has different tournaments, like Score a Goal, Fan (for RFPL club supporters) and Holy Russia (for FNL clubs supporters), but there were no international tournaments till 2014.
Everybody liked the idea to gather supporters from hero-cities in one place – the tournament was held on 1 February 2014 in St.Petersburg and coincided with Commonwealth Cup – an international tournament for U-21 teams – held at the same time.
The symbolic meaning has the fact that it was 70 –anniversary of Siege of Leningrad liberation at the end of January. The Siege lasted since 8 September 1941 till 27 January 1944 – 872 days.
The tournament matches were held in Sport and Concert Complex Peterburgskiy. Supporters from St.Petersburg (Leningrad during War), Moscow, Volgograd (Stalingrad during War), Tula, Murmansk, Kiev, Odessa, Brest and Minsk.
The tournament was won by the team from Smolensk, but football itself, even though it was very important, went to the background – the main result of the first tournament was the perfect atmosphere created by the organizers and participants of the tournament. The fans, which arrived from different cities, found a common language very quickly. After returning home they did not lose contacts of their new friends and still keep in touch.
The following fact can’t help being mentioned: the tournament was held with the support of the Football Union of Russia and Nikolay Tolstykh, its President. The following day after the event all supporters and Tolstykh brought flowers to the Memorial of Defense and Siege of Leningrad.
We would like to remind that Hero-City is the top title, which received twelve cities of the USSR after their heroic defense during Great Patriotic War (World War II). This title was received by the following cities: Leningrad (now St.Petersburg), Odessa, Sevastopol, Stalingrad (now Volgograd), Kiev, Moscow, Kerch, Novorossiisk, Minsk, Tula, Murmansk and Smolensk.
Besides, Brest Fortress received the title Hero-Fortress.
