Record-breaking growth highlighted in PwC study of RPL economics

print version

Total Russian Premier League attendances have grown once again, according to PwC’s in-depth analysis of RPL economics covering the 2018/19 season. The recently-released study shows that there has been an increase each season since 2014/15, with last season showing a 20% increase of average matchday attendance to 16,800.

Over 4 million fans walked through the turnstiles last season, the first after the 2018 FIFA World Cup, generating a total gate revenue of 3.28 billion roubles. This represents a 9% increase in gate receipts on the previous season.

RPL President Sergey Pryadkin has explained that the increases are all part of the league’s plans to improve fan experience and build attendances. More clubs are providing merchandise outlets, pre and in-game entertainment, family sectors and improved transport services. Eight percent of media and commercial rights revenue will be awarded to reward clubs that attract a 50% increase in matchday attendance figures.

Fans at home and overseas are benefitting too. New social media platforms such as the video-sharing network TikTok are being exploited while live broadcasts of RPL matches on YouTube for fans outside Russia have increased too. RPL total social media subscribers had topped 3.3 million by December 2019, while Match Premier TV channel’s subscription base had also grown.
