On This Day: Anton Sosnin scores only professional goal, a 35-yard top-corner screamer

On 11 April 2015, Kuban Krasnodar midfielder Anton Sosnin scored the only goal of his senior career, but his team lost the city derby to FC Krasnodar.

As an academy product, he won the Youth Championship in 2009 with Zenit St.Petersburg but did not play for the senior team in official matches. In the summer of 2010, the Blue-White-Sky Blues loaned Sosnin to Krylia Sovetov Samara, for whom he played 11 games in the RPL, and at the end of the year, Samara made the move permanent.

The following winter, the ex-Zenit player replaced Krylia, who were struggling to survive in the extended transitional season, with top-eight side Kuban. The player's transfer was a personal desire of Kuban head coach Dan Petrescu. Sosnin worked in Krasnodar under five managers but only got a foothold in the senior team with Viktor Goncharenko.

Under Petrescu, who was so eager to see the player, Sosnin appeared four times in the RPL and only played one full match, at the Petrovsky stadium against Zenit. Yuriy Krasnozhan used the midfielder just once, in the Russian Cup, while Leonid Kuchuk only used him twice, both times in the RPL. Russia under-21 manager Nikolay Pisarev was worried about the player’s lack of practice, and as a result did not take him to the European Championships in the summer of 2013.

Dorinel Munteanu, who came to FC Kuban from Mordovia, picked the player more often than his predecessors, but mostly from the bench. Work with Goncharenko began the same way, but since the spring of 2014 Sosnin played without pauses.

"Under Viktor Mikhailovich, I play more often,” Sosnin told Sportsdaily.ru, “which of course only made me glad. I am grateful to him for his trust and support. However, there are no guarantees in the future. I have to earn my right to go on the pitch every day." Even when the Belarusian coach was dismissed and his compatriot Kuchuk returned to the team, the player kept his place in the side.

From these adventures, it is clear why he was not inclined to talk about goals. He scored periodically as a youth player, but never at senior level. That was until the Krasnodar Derby in April 2015, where his stunning long-range shot struck the top corner to break the deadlock. No less vivid was the reaction of the author of the goal.

Sosnin and his teammate Vladislav Ignatiev scored beautiful goals, but they did not bring victory. FC Krasnodar won 3-2 and continued their fight for a place in the Champions League, which they eventually lost to CSKA Moscow.

FC Kuban finished the championship in 10th place, lost the Russian Cup final to Lokomotiv, and in the off-season Sosnin moved to Dynamo. In five seasons with the blue and white team, the player scored only in friendly matches, including against Ajax.

Sosnin remembered his goal in the Krasnodar Derby modestly. "There had been a lot of chances, but I don't know why I couldn’t score. I think many times I would have to repeat such an effort to hit the top corner. I do go over the moment, but not often."
