Matchday 30 highlights: Zenit equal Spartak record, three players played every minute

print version

We have picked out the most interesting numbers from the last matchday of the 2019/20 season.

Konstantin Paramonov won his first RPL match as a coach. Under his leadership, FC Orenburg beat Dynamo Moscow away. This was the 46-year-old's 12th game as an RPL manager. In the spring of 2014 Paramonov managed Amkar Perm for six matches, drawing three and losing three. The coach took charge of Orenburg before the start of the season: in six matches - without taking into account the technical defeats against FC Krasnodar and Ural Ekaterinburg - the team lost four times, drew with FC Rostov and won against Dynamo.

For the second consecutive season, Zenit St. Petersburg, Lokomotiv Moscow and FC Krasnodar finished in the top three in the RPL. Just like last year, these three teams will represent Russia in the Champions League. Zenit and Lokomotiv will again enter at the group stage, and Krasnodar will start from the third qualifying round. The Blue-White-Sky Blues won their sixth RPL title, Lokomotiv were runners up for the second time, and the Bulls finished third for the third time in nine years.

Anton Miranchuk scored for the third time in a row against Ural in Ekaterinburg. In March 2018, at the SKB-Bank Arena, the midfielder opened the scoring as Lokomotiv won 2-0. On the penultimate matchday of the 2018/19 season, Anton scored a double at the Centralniy Stadium, but it only earned a 2-2 draw. Now Miranchuk not only scored the only goal in the match, but also received a red card in added time - the second in his RPL career. His first dismissal was also earned in Ekaterinburg, in May 2017, and then Lokomotiv also won (2-1) while down to 10 men.

FC Krasnodar scored four goals against Akhmat Grozny thanks to Marcus Berg. The Swedish forward scored a double and made two assists. For the 33-year-old striker, this is the fourth game in his career when he has combined four points in a single match as scorer and assistant. For Panathinaikos (twice) and Al Ain, the Swede bagged a hat-trick and an assist. Berg also became the top league scorer of his team for the seventh season in a row. After four years in Greece and two in the UAE, he became the leading RPL goalscorer for Krasnodar with nine goals.

For the sixth time this season, three penalties were awarded in one match. In the recent clash between Rubin Kazan and Spartak Moscow, two spot kicks were scored by the Red-Whites, and another by Rubin. Of the five previous games with three penalties, only in Zenit’s 6-1 thrashing of FC Rostov all penalties were converted. Artem Dzyuba made a double, and Roman Eremenko also scored. In the Krasnodar vs Krylia Sovetov, Arsenal vs Sochi and Rostov vs CSKA games, only one out of three penalties were scored, while Maximilian Philipp scored both his penalties when Dynamo faced Rostov but Aleksey Ionov's spot kick was kept out by Anton Shunin.

Eight years passed between 18-year-old Nikita Belousov’s debut for FC Ufa and his father’s last match for them. Leonid Belousov played for the team from 2011 to 2012, playing 35 games in the PFL before leaving Ufa at the end of the season. Nikita Belousov, who plays as a midfielder, made his bow in the starting XI on the last RPL matchday this season against Arsenal and played the full 90 minutes. Earlier in the season, he played eight games in the Youth Championship and 13 games for Ufa-2 in the PFL.

Georgi Schennikov scored the 10th goal of his career, but this time the left-back scored for the first time with his right foot. The winning goal against Tambov was the 29-year-old Armyman's sixth in the RPL. Schennikov has scored three more times in the Champions League, while he scored his first official goal in March 2014 in the Russian Cup quarter-final against Terek Grozny.

Zenit strikers Sardar Azmoun and Artem Dzyuba both finished with 17 goals. The Iranian caught up with his teammate after scoring against Rostov and was named the season's top scorer thanks to fewer of his goals coming from penalties (one vs seven). This is the second time in RPL history when the top two scorers finished level on goals played for the same team. In 2002, the leaders were CSKA players Roland Gusev and Dmitry Kirichenko with 15 goals. In the 2012/13 season, the first two positions were also shared by Wanderson (Krasnodar) and Yura Movsisyan (Krasnodar/Spartak), who both scored 13 goals.

Three players played every minute of all 30 matchdays. Among them was only one outfield player, Akhmat defender Andrey Semenov, who had previously missed at least one RPL game every season. The previous outfield player to play every match was Ural defender Denis Kulakov in the 2017/18 season. This season, two goalkeepers - Rubin’s Yury Dupin and CSKA’s  Igor Akinfeev - played 90 minutes in every match. They are the only ones who have played all matches in the last two seasons.

Zenit finished on 72 points at the end of the season - the best result in all RPL seasons, and a repeat of the Russian Championships record set by Spartak in 1999. Moreover, both the Red-Whites and Zenit had the same results: 22 wins, six draws and two losses. Spartak also scored 73 points in 1997, but then there were 18 teams in the top flight, and from the next season the number of participants was reduced to the current 16.
