Key points from Matchday 27: Prokhin record, Sadulaev breaks new ground, Rafal on fire

print version

We have rounded up the key points and numbers from matchday 27 of the Russian Premier Liga.

Zero - CSKA were edged out by the finest of margins in the Moscow Derby, as Jordan Larsson’s breathtaking individual strike settled matters, and there were a number of near misses late on. However, for all their bursts of counter-attacking play, they failed to have a direct threat - in fact, they failed to register a single shot on target for the first time in a RPL match in over four years.

One - Lechi Sadulaev broke a few landmarks when he scored against Ural Ekaterinburg away this weekend; perhaps most importantly for him, it was his first goal for Akhmat Grozny in the Russian Premier Liga. It also came in his first RPL start this season, and he became the youngest Akhmat goalscorer since 2019 at 21 years of age.

Three - Sergey Pesyakov was the deserving man of the match for Rostov as they edged past 10-man Arsenal Tula, after keeping out a last-minute penalty from Robert Bauer. It was the third penalty Pesyakov has saved this season - more than any other man between the sticks in the RPL this campaign.

Four - In response, Polish midfielder Rafal Augustyniak struck back for the hosts with his fourth goal of the season. It was a spectacular hit with his left foot that flew in from distance, and in fact meant that all four of his RPL goals this season have come from outside the penalty area. This tally is the highest in the league for outside of the area goals; CSKA’s Nikola Vlasic, Sochi’s Christian Noboa and Rubin’s Darko Jevtic are one behind on three.

Five - Solomon Kverkvelia has picked up three Russian Cups, one Russian Super Cup and become RPL champion once in almost a decade since his top-flight debut in Russia, but this weekend he claimed another crown - that of most own goals since 2008. His unfortunate moment when he turned the ball into his own net was the fifth time he’d done so.

Eight - Grzegorz Krychowiak has now been involved in eight goals in 2021 (scoring six and assisting two), the most in the RPL alongside Aleksandr Sobolev. The Polish midfielder is Lokomotiv’s top scorer this campaign with nine after scoring twice against Tambov, equalling his goals tally in all competitions from last season - and his total goals involvement of 15 (11 goals and four assists in 2019/20).

12 - Spartak have little trouble scoring, with only leaders Zenit having racked up more RPL goals so far this season. Not only that, but they also have two of the top four goalscorers in Jordan Larsson (13) and Aleksandr Sobolev (12). However, in beating city rivals CSKA 1-0, they claimed their first clean sheet in 12 league matches.

18 - Zenit St. Petersburg took a giant step towards retaining their title with a rampant 6-0 win over Rotor Volgograd last weekend, with five goals coming in the second half alone. In fact they didn’t even break the deadlock until the first 45 minutes had been completed, with the first goal coming in first-half added time through a Solomon Kverkvelia own goal, but they did manage a whopping 18 shots in the opening half - 10 of them on target - with both numbers standing as RPL records this season.

19 - Danila Prokhin opened the scoring for Sochi in their last-gasp 3-2 win away to Ufa this weekend with his first goal for the southern club since joining on loan from champions Zenit St. Petersburg. In doing so, he became the youngest RPL goalscorer for Sochi at 19 years and 336 days.
