Matchday 6 Review: Azmoun's century, Zenit extend Russian capitals run, Maksimenko's first

print version

We have rounded up all the best stats and figures from matchday six of the Russian Premier Liga.

One - Ural Ekaterinburg remain bottom of the table heading into the international break, but at least they doubled their points tally. For that they had Artem Maksimenko to thank; the former Veles Moscow winger scored his first RPL goal in the final 10 minutes to secure a 1-1 draw at home to Rostov.

Two - Spartak looked to be heading for a much-needed win over Sochi when Roman Zobnin gave them the lead on the hour mark, before a sloppy double let them down. He has now scored two goals in his last three RPL games, the same as in his last 38. It also means he has equalled his best goals total, having never scored more than two in an RPL campaign.

Three - Krylia took firm control over Ufa in their visit to Bashkortostan, racing into a 2-0 halftime lead. Anton Zinkovskiy set up both goals for the visitors, meaning he has now provided two or more assists in an RPL match for the third time since joining Krylia in 2019. Only Artem Dzyuba has more (4) in that time.

Five - In reply in that game, Gamid Agalarov pulled one back from the spot in the second half, but it turned out to be a mere consolation. The new Russia under-21 call-up has now scored five goals this season, and has also now scored in three consecutive top flight games, having failed to score in his first 10.

Six - A pulsating Moscow derby between leaders Dynamo and Lokomotiv ended 1-1 with endless chances for both sides. It was Fedor Smolov who made his chance count first though as his calmly guided finish found the bottom corner for his sixth goal in six games. He is already just one goal short of his best season in front of goal since before the 2018 World Cup.

14 - There was no shortage of drama in Grozny as Akhmat edged to a last-gasp 2-1 win with virtually the last kick of the Match from Igor Konovalov, after the hosts had earlier taken the lead in controversial circumstances. The agonising defeat means that Arsenal have now lost 14 consecutive away games, the longest such run since FC Tyumen (18) between 1992-94.

15 - Zenit were matched almost every step of the way at home to CSKA, with the match goalless heading into the closing stages. Sardar Azmoun's inspired individual strike settled matters to hand the reigning Champions all three points, and leave them unbeaten their last 15 home games against Moscow clubs - their longest ever top-flight run against the capital.

17 - After a shaky start to the season - including a managerial change - Rostov made it two games unbeaten by claiming a 1-1 draw out in Ekaterinburg. One significant figure in their point was Viktor Melekhin, who became the youngest player to be named in a starting XI this season at 17 years, eight months and 11 days old.

49 - Azmoun's sensational finish took him to within one goal of a half-century for Zenit. He has scored 49 goals since his Zenit debut in 2019, at least nine more than any other player in that period.

100 - One landmark he did hit was a monumental one; the Iranian's winner was his 100th goal in Russian football after 17 goals for Rubin Kazan, 25 for Rostov and 58 for Zenit.
