Matchday 8 Review: Zakharyan & Pinyaev’s youthful records, Glushakov & Agalarov’s hot streaks, Dzyuba ends drought

print version

We have gathered all of our favourite stats and figures from the Matchday Eight fixtures in the Russian Premier Liga.

2 - Arsen Zakharyan has become the second-youngest player ever to reach five Russian Premier Liga goals at 18 years, three months and 24 days, completing the feat in 21 games. The only player to manage the minor milestone at a younger age was Alan Dzagoev, who beat him by just 20 days (18 years, three months, four days), but also managed the tally in just 13 games.

3 - Krylia Sovetov have now won three of their last four RPL matches after their hectic 4-2 win at home to Rostov at the weekend, as many as they had managed in their previous 21 games in the league (D6, L12). Their run marks a serious upturn in fortunes, having started the season with just one point from their opening four matches.

4 - Denis Glushakov was in the unusual position of scoring twice but still being on the losing side as Ufa edged past Khimki at the weekend. It was the second time in his career that he’d scored in four consecutive RPL matches - the last time was over a decade ago for Lokomotiv. His consolation prize was a return to the senior national side after being named in Valery Karpin’s extended squad.

7 - Artem Dzyuba’s double away to Rubin Kazan were his first goals of the season, ending his seven-match RPL drought - his longest since March 2019. If you include the Champions league and Russian Super Cup, the RPL’s 2020/21 top scorer’s goalless run was nine matches.

8 - Gamid Agalarov’s seemingly unstoppable form continues as he scored twice in Ufa’s 3-2 win over Khimki, taking him top of the RPL scoring charts on eight goals. Remarkably, he hadn’t managed a single goal in his first 12 career RPL matches. His reward was a first call-up to the full senior squad, having scored three goals in two matches for the under-21 side.

11 - Erik Bicfalvi once again couldn’t find the back of the net for Ural in their 0-0 draw at home to Lokomotiv. The Romanian forward has now failed to score for 11 successive RPL appearances - his longest such run in the competition.

14 - Arsenal Tula finally ended their 14-game losing run away from home with a dramatic 3-2 win away to Nizhny Novgorod. The match swung backwards and forwards, as the hosts took the lead, before Arsenal fought back in front only to see the scores levelled - setting up Goran Causic’s thrilling winner in the last minute of added time. It was the second-longest streak of its kind after FC Tyumen’s 18 games between 1992 and 1994.

16 - Sergey Pinyaev provided his first RPL assist in Krylia Sovetov’s pulsating 4-2 win over Rostov, setting up Vladislav Sarveli in added time, to become the youngest player to ever set up a goal in the league at 16 years and 10 months - pipping Jano Ananidze, who was 17 years old when he broke the record.

61 - There is no question who were the happier of Ural and Lokomotiv as the Railroaders were held to a draw in Ekaterinburg. Although the hosts remain the only RPL team without a win all season, it was their first clean sheet of the campaign. The goalless draw was the first 0-0 result so far this season across the whole league, after 61 matches without one. This is a new RPL record for the longest wait for a season’s first match without goals.
