On May 24, the Russian Football Union Executive Committee discussed the formats of professional competitions in the 2022/23 season.

Members of the Executive Committee supported the preservation of the current RPL format. The 2022/23 Russian Championship will be held in two legs with the participation of 16 teams.

The Executive Committee also considered the possibility of including a new tournament in the competition calendar - the RPL Cup, which will fill the vacated slots for European competitions games. By 15 July, the Executive Committee instructed to finalize the structure of the tournament, calculate the financial model, and agreed contracts with the main sponsors.

The Executive Committee also approved the results of the 2021/22 RPL season. Zenit St. Petersburg are confirmed as the champions of Russia, while the teams that took 15th and 16th places relegated from the league directly on a sporting basis - these are Rubin Kazan and Arsenal Tula.
