Agony for Spartak as Legia hit added-time winner

print version

Spartak Moscow 0-1 Legia Warsaw
Europa League Group C
Wednesday 15 September, Spartak Stadium

Goal: Legia - Kastrati 90+1'

Spartak were left licking their wounds as Legia struck in added time to snatch all three points for the visitors. Not for the first time, space opened up on Spartak's right for a simple deep cross to reach Kastrsti to tap into an open goal from six yards out.

In the first half Roman Zobnin hobbled off with an injury, but his side remained firmly in control. Despite the dominance, only two of their 17 shots ended up on target.

Ironically, it was Spartak's central defenders who combined for the best chance of the game just after the hour. Georgi Dzhikia whipped in a superb cross from the left to a totally unmarked Samuel Gigot about six yards out, but the Frenchman could only plant his header against the crossbar.

They were nearly punished 10 minutes later when Nikolay Rasskazov - playing out of position in a back three - was caught out of position to leave Luquinhas completely clear, only to blaze wildly over.

A swift counter attack later at the death, and Rui Victoria's side were left shell shocked.

Spartak head straight to the bottom of Group C on no points, while Legia go top on three points.

Next Europa League fixtures: Thursday 30 September - Legia Warsaw vs Leicester City; Napoli vs Spartak Moscow
