UEFA reform of European club competitions needs more discussions

print version

Russian Premier League clubs discussed UEFA proposal for reforming European club competitions post 2024.

During these discussions the clubs expressed their concerns that the proposed reforms can negatively affect the structure of the RPL calendar and to decrease its competitiveness in comparison to other top European leagues. Besides the proposed format and qualification criteria to the renewed tournaments can seriously damage all European leagues.

The clubs unanimously agreed that domestic championship should remain in priority and any changes to the football calendar must take into consideration the requirements of the domestic competition. And qualification to UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League should still depend on the recent performance of the clubs in the Premier League.

Taking into consideration all the above the RPL clubs unanimously agreed on the resolution against the project of UEFA club competitions reforms post 2024 which is being discussed now and the clubs also entitled the League administration to continue cooperation with European Leagues, supporters and other stakeholders in order to work out proposals to improve European club competitions without damaging domestic national championship.
