Russian champions Rubin Kazan became the winners of 18th Commonwealth of Independent States Cup that was held in Moscow from 16th to 24th January. Final match saw young Rubin side defeating champions of Kazakhstan ‘Aktobe’ 5:2 in an impressive performance.
Rubin won this title for the first time becoming 3rd Russian club after Spartak Moscow (1993, 1994, 1995, 1999, 2000, 2001) and Lokomotiv (2005) to lift the trophy.
Commonwealth of Independent States Cup is a tournament for football clubs which was set up after the split of the Soviet Union. It is open to all the national champions of the successor states of the Union, i.e., the Commonwealth of Independent States member states, as well as Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania. Finnish club HIK was also the participant of this year tournament.
