After an extended illness Victor Tikhonov, ice hockey player and coach, passed away in Moscow. He was 84.
Victor Tikhonov made a lot for development of the Russian ice hockey and healthy way of life promotion. He was a real professional, who set the highest aims and taught his trainees to win even over the strongest opponents.
Tikhonov played 296 matches and delivered 35 pucks in the USSR Championships. As a player he became the USSR Champion in 1951-1954 (three times with VVS, and once with Dynamo Moscow), Runner-up in 1959, 1960, 1962 and 1963, won bronze medals in 1955-1958, Cup of Russia holder of 1952.
He worked as a coach in Dynamo Moscow and Dynamo Riga.
In the period between 1977 and 1996 Victor Tikhonov coached CSKA, which became the country Champion 14 times, the European Champions Cup holder – 14 times, twice the Cup of the USSR holder. Among his achievements and merits as a coach there are silver medals of the Olympics(1980), wins at Ice Hockey World Championship (1978, 1979, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1986, 1989, 1990).
