Martin Jiranek wondergoal video hits 4 million views

print version

Martin Jiranek’s sensational long-range goal for Terek Grozny away to Kuban Krasnodar in 2012 has hit global headlines again after the official Russian Premier League twitter account reshared it at the weekend. Within 24 hours it had been viewed 1.5 million times after being picked up by various popular accounts and has now collected over 4 million views.

In the 35th minute, Kuban midfielder Vladislav Kulik hooked a corner clear towards Jiranek near the centre circle. After taking one touch to control it, the former Birmingham City defender lashed a viciously swerving rocket into the top right corner of Aleksandr Belenov’s goal.

Unfortunately, it didn’t help his side win as Kuban went on to win 2-1. It has managed to cause considerable confusion abroad this week though, as many followers wanted to vote for it to win the Puskas Award.

The popularity of the short clip shouldn’t be a surprise given its sheer quality, or the fact it was reshared by some of the most popular sports accounts on social media. One of them, 433 - which has over 25 million Instagram followers - has also named two other videos of RPL players in their top three most popular clips of 2019.

Evgeniy Chernov’s remarkable goalline block for Rostov against Lokomotiv Moscow came third after gathering 4.9 million views and 1.5 million likes. Malcom’s precise aerial pass that struck referee Evgeniy Turbin - and the latter’s subsequent meme-worthy thumbs up - garnered 5.7 million views and 1.7 million likes.
