Makarov’s second Rubin winner in two games stuns Krasnodar

Denis Makarov’s second goal in two games sealed a shock win for Rubin Kazan over Champions League-chasing FC Krasnodar. The RPL’s lowest scorers actually dominated shots on goal before the inevitable onslaught from the visitors late on but held firm.

Just after half time Denis Makarov stunned the high-flying visitors by finishing a rapid counter attack. Filip Uremovic laid a long ball back to the midfielder to rifle in a left-footed effort via a deflection from former Rubin Kazan player Egor Sorokin.

Rubin had the ball in the net again with 15 minutes to go when Evgeniy Markov’s run deceived Matvey Safonov’s sight of the ball, but the substitute was offside by the finest of margins.

Rubin Kazan are away to CSKA Moscow next on Sunday 12 July, while FC Krasnodar host Ural Ekaterinburg on the same day.
