Zenit St. Petersburg 2-1 Lokomotiv Moscow
Russian Super Cup, VEB Arena, Friday 7 August
Goals: Zenit - Dzyuba (14), Ozdoev (69); Lokomotiv - Corluka (72)
Zenit St. Petersburg claimed their fifth Russian Super Cup - a feat which earned them the right to keep the trophy permanently - with a tightly fought win over Lokomotiv Moscow. The result also saw Marko Nikolic’s first defeat since taking over from Yury Semin as manager at the Railwaymen.
Less than quarter of an hour into the new season, Artem Dzyuba headed in a perfect cross from Douglas Santos. Magomed Ozdoev curled home a beautiful long-range effort off the crossbar with just over 20 minutes remaining, only for Vedran Corluka to stab home an Anton Miranchuk flick-on three minutes later.
Both sides begin their RPL campaign on Tuesday 11 August, when Zenit travel to take on newly promoted Rotor Volgograd and Lokomotiv are away to Rubin Kazan.
