Eight RPL teams through to Russian Cup last 16 from elite round

On 21 October, RPL teams took on FNL opposition on matchday three of the Russian Cup elite round.

Group 1: Veles Moscow 1-3 Ural Ekaterinburg

Ural conceded in the 54th minute, but pulled victory from the jaws of defeat late in the second half thanks to an Eric Bicfalvi hat-trick. The Romanian converted a penalty in the 86th minute, then three minutes later he scored a header, and in added time finished into an empty net from his own half. Ural topped the group with six points.

Group 2: Enisey Krasnoyarsk 1-0 Spartak Moscow

Juan Lescano's goal in the 47th minute claimed the win for the hosts. All three teams in the group – alongside Yenisey and Spartak there was also Rodina Moscow – scored three points, but thanks to their superior goal difference, the Red-Whites reached the final knockout stage.

Group 3: Tekstilshchik Ivanovo 0-0 (3-4 pens) Arsenal Tula

The match ended in a goalless draw in normal time, but in the 84th minute Arsenal went down to 10 men after the dismissal of Artem Sokol. In the penalty shootout, the visitors scored all four spot kicks, while Egor Shamov kept out two penalties from the hosts. Tekstilshchik and Arsenal finished the group with four points each, but due to their head-to-head victory Arsenal finished first and progress.

Group 4: Chertanovo Moscow 0-4 FC Ufa

In the fifth minute, Timur Zhamaletdinov missed a penalty – the ball hit the post – but four minutes later opened the scoring. In the second half, Dmitry Sysuev, Vyacheslav Krotov and Komnen Andrich, who was making his debut for Rashid Rakhimov’s team, all scored for Ufa. The visitors advance to the knockouts after collecting maximum points to finish first.

Group 5: Nizhny Novgorod 1-1 (9-10 pens) FC Khimki

Nizhny Novgorod went in front in the 51st minute thanks to Aleksandr Stavpets, but Khimki hit back in the 74th thanks to a goal by Mohamed Konate. In the shootout, both sides took 11 penalties each, and in the last round, the visitors' goalkeeper Dmitry Khomich first saved Ivan Temnikov’s effort, then converted his own attempt. Igor Cherevchenko's team finished first in the group with five points.

Group 6: Shinnik Yaroslavl 1-1 (3-4 pens) Akhmat Grozny

Akhmat led from the 54th minute when substitute Islam Alsultanov scored, but Yaroslavl escaped defeat in regular time in the third added minute thanks to a goal by Pavel Evseev. In the shootout, Akhmat converted four penalties out of five, and Yaroslavl twice hit the crossbar. Akhmat finished first with five points.

Group 7: Krylia Sovetov Samara 3-0 Rotor Volgograd

Dmitry Kombarov, Dmitry Tsypchenko and Egor Golenkov scored for Krylia. Rotor ended up as the only RPL side not to reach the knockouts from the elite round. They didn’t score a single point in the group: on the first matchday, Rotor were handed a technical defeat for not showing up for the match against Dynamo Stavropol.

Group 8: FC Orenburg 1-1 (2-4 pens) FC Sochi

Both teams scored in the first half as Artem Yusupov and Marko Dugandzic scored from the penalty spot. In the 70th minute, Sochi went down to 10 men when Ivan Novoseltsev was shown a second yellow card, but Nikolay Zabolotny saved the penalty. The Sochi goalkeeper also saved two shots in the penalty shootout, while his teammates converted all four spot kicks. Sochi, having won the group, reach the Russian Cup last 16 for the first time.

Group 10: Dynamo Bryansk 0-2 FC Tambov

German Onugkha, who scored against Rotor on the last RPL matchday, and Soslan Takazov scored for Tambov in Bryansk. Sergey Pervushin's team scored six points out of six and made it to the Russian Cup last 16 for the second time in their history.

The SKA-Khabarovsk vs Rubin Group 9 match was postponed to 4 November at the request of the RPL side. The game in Khabarovsk will start at 10:00.

Zenit, Lokomotiv, Krasnodar, CSKA, Rostov and Dynamo automatically qualified for the last 16 due to qualifying for European competitions at the end of the 2019/20 season. Last-16 fixtures are scheduled for 20/21 February.
