Key stats from matchday 30: Dzyuba milestones, Spartak’s clinical fighting spirit, Ilyin

print version

We have gathered some of the key stats and figures from the final matchday of the 2020/21 Russian Premier Liga season.

One - An intense last day was matched by the intense heat in Bashkortostan that cause the Ufa vs Arsenal kickoff to be delayed by two hours, as the relegation rivals met face to face. By the the equation was simple - Arsenal were already safe, after Rubin Kazan’s late equaliser at home to Rotor Volgograd, but Ufa needed to avoid defeat. In the end they did more than that, beating 10-man Arsenal to secure safety - in doing so, they condemned Arsenal to just one point away from home all season.

Two - Although the title was already wrapped up, there was still plenty on the line at the business end of the table with Lokomotiv and Spartak fighting for the second Champions League spot. A fighting spirit has characterised their season, and it was once again on show here as they earned the crucial point needed to secure second place. It was the first time they’d avoided defeat after going two goals down since May 2015 - back then Quincy Promes also scored, bagging a double against Amkar Perm.

4.5 - After Krasnodar’s 3-1 win away to neighbours Rostov, they extended an impressive run against their southern rivals. In 22 total top-flight meetings, the Bulls have lost just once, giving them a 4.5% loss rate; the only sides against whom they have lost fewer are this season’s two relegated sides, Rotor Volgograd and FC Tambov.

Nine - Vladimir Ilyin gave Akhmat Grozny a blistering start against Spartak before eventually having to settle for a 2-2 draw, but the striker’s double saw him end the campaign with by far his highest personal goals tally of nine. In his whole top-flight career he has only managed 24 goals.

20 - Artem Dzyuba stole the show on the final day with his sensational performance unsurprisingly earning him a Man of the Match award after scoring four goals. His feat also edged him one clear of club teammate Sardar Azmoun to win the RPL top scorer’s crown outright, leaving him on 20 goals for the season to the Iranian’s 19. He is also the first player to score 20 goals in a single RPL campaign since Fedor Smolov for Krasnodar in 2015/16.

22 - Domenico Tedesco bows out of the Russian Premier Liga with his head held high after not only securing Champions League football, but imbuing a clinical edge to their play. Victor Moses’ goal earned a point after a nervy start had seen the Red-Whites go 2-0 down away to Akhmat. It meant they finished the season with 22 points earned from losing positions (W6, D4, L7) - the most in the RPL, more than double than the next highest tally.

87.5 - Tedesco also leaves with a remarkable record to his name; In his short time in charge, he racked up the highest conversion rate from winning positions, picking up 87.5% of available points from winning positions. This surpasses even the legendary Oleg Romantsev (87.26%), and is only bettered by two managers in Spartak history - Konstantin Kvashnin and Pyotr Popov - both of whom were in charge before the Great Patriotic War ended.

200 - Artem Dzyuba didn’t just break records for this season; he also crossed 200 total career goals. He now has 95 in 210 matches, having already scored 38 in 165 games for Spartak, 20 in 43 for Rostov, 14 in 35 for Tom Tomsk, and 6 in 10 for Arsenal Tula, while also closing in on Aleksandr Kerzhakov’s all-time record for the Russian national team with 29 in 50 caps.
