We present the Russian national team for Euro 2020.
Who hasn't played for the national team yet?
Rubin players Yury Dupin and Denis Makarov are the only representatives from the squad who has not yet made debut for the national team. The 33-year-old goalkeeper only received his first call-up to the national team in March, while the 23-year-old midfielder joined the camp before the Euro. Last season, the goalkeeper kept nine clean sheets, the fifth best tally in the RPL, and Makarov was the second team scorer after Djorjde Desptovic with seven goals. Thanks to Dyupin and Makarov performances Rubin made the top four at the end of the season and will play in European competition for the first time since 2015.
Who will feature in their first major tournament for the national team?
Fourteen players have never been to a major tournament with the Russian national team before. In addition to Dupin, they are goalkeeper Matvey Safonov, defenders Georgy Dzhikia, Vyacheslav Karavaev, Igor Diveev and Roman Evgenyev, midfielders Dmitry Barinov, Daniil Fomin, Maksim Mukhin, Magomed Ozdoev, Denis Makarov and Rifat Zhemaletdinov, and forwards Aleksandr Sobolev and Anton Zabolotny. In 2018 Dzhikia did not go to the World Cup due to an injury, while Evgenyev replaced Andrey Mostovoy in the squad the day before the start of the Euros, who received an unfavorable result of PCR testing.
Diveev, Evgenyev and Makarov have already played at the Euros this year - with the Russian U-21 team. In March, the players took part in all three matches of the group stage, and Makarov scored a goal in the first match against Iceland before being voted onto the team of the whole tournament.
Who is the most experienced player?
For Yury Zhirkov, these European Championships will be the third in his career. He finished third at Euro 2008 and was named in the team of the tournament. He also participated in Euro 2012, and the World Cups in 2014 (one match) and 2018 (three).
Who was left out of Euro 2016?
From the current squad, only Aleksandr Golovin and Artem Dzyuba played at the last Euros. In France, Golovin made his competitive debut for the national team and participated in all three games. Dzyuba scored eight goals in eight qualifying games before Euro 2016, but never scored in the finals themselves.
Who has already competed at World Cups and European Championships?
Another player who previously went with the national team to a European Championship is Anton Shunin. The Dynamo goalkeeper was included in the squad in 2012, but never appeared on the pitch when the main goalkeeper was Vyacheslav Malafeev.
Aleksey Ionov and Andrey Semenov were included for the World Cup in 2014, but did not play a single match. Semenov was also named in the squad for the 2018 World Cup, but also did not earn any game time. At the home tournament, in addition to Golovin and Dzyuba, Fedor Kudryashov, Mario Fernandes, Roman Zobnin, Daler Kuzyaev, Denis Cheryshev and Aleksey Miranchuk played for Russia, although the latter played only one match.
