UEFA Champions League, Third Qualifying Round, Second Leg
SL Benfica 2-0 Spartak Moscow (agg. 4-0)
Tuesday August 10, Estadio Da Luz, Lisbon
Goals: Benfica - Joao Mario 57’, Gigot (Own Goal) 90+2'
Spartak Moscow crashed out of the UEFA Champions League after a defeat to Benfica in Lisbon. After a goalless first half, Benfica took the lead through ex-Lokomotiv midfielder Joao Mario. Rui Vitoria’s men were three goals down on aggregate at that point, and couldn’t do enough to come back into the game. A own goal in added time was the dagger that sealed the deal on a tragic tie. They will now continue their European journey in the Europa League group stage.
Spartak will now take on Ural on Saturday in a bid to get their season back on track.
