The pendulum swung back and forth at the Fisht Central Stadium, but eventually the visitors came back from a goal down to snatch all three points, with their Danish stars central to the key moments.

As they have done in all their home matches this season bar one, Sochi took the lead in the first half through a Rodrigao header. The Brazilian met Christian Noboa’s corner with perfect timing, but the advantage didn’t last long. A long, sweep ball over the top released Soltmurad Bakaev down the left to push right to the byline, before picking out Oliver Abildgaard lurking outside the penalty area.

The Danish midfielder struck a peach of a low swerving drive with his left foot through a sea of defenders into the far bottom corner for his first ever RPL goal. He would go from hero to zero after the break though when he was shown a red card just after the hour mark. Moments earlier Igor Yurganov had been sent off too, leaving more spaces down the pitch for both sides.

Anders Dreyer was the one to exploit them best. Edging into the last 10 minutes - and having just changed his boots - the newly capped Danish international raced onto a fantastic In-beom Hwang ball over the top to smash home a spectacular winner. Still with work to do though, he cut inside Sergey Terekhov before sending a dipping shot over Nikolay Zabolotny.

Deep into added time, Zabolotny came up for a Sochi corner, but Rubin managed to clear it before he could track back. Dreyer was left with an open goal from distance, but his lobbed finish into the corner was chalked off for a marginal offside. No matter; despite Sochi taking 31 shots on goal and Rubin just seven, two of which were on target, the most important statistic ended in the visitors’ favour.

Sochi stay third on 27 points, while Rubin go eighth on 22 points.
