Volkov breaks Rubin hearts with late winner

print version

Rubin Kazan 0-1 Krasnodar
Saturday 9 April, AkBars Arena

Goal: Krasnodar - Volkov 85’
Man of the Match: Yuri Gazinsky (Krasnodar)
Sent off: Krasnodar - Aleksandr Chernikov 90+3’

Krasnodar's inexperienced side - eight of the starting line-up had fewer than 40 first-team league appearances between them - dominated possession in Kazan, although the hosts had the more threatening chances.

With no breakthrough coming, though, Leonid Skutskily threw on striker German Onugkha - and the substitute almost handed him a precious winner.

Vitaly Lisakovich whipped in a low cross which Onugkha turned in beautifully behind his standing leg, only to see the linesman raise his flag for offside.

With five minutes to go, however, Sergey Volkov struck to plunge Rubin firmly into the relegation zone - cutting inside Ilya Samoshnikov, his firm shot took a deflection off Montessar Talbi on its way past keeper Yuri Dyupin.

Aleksandr Chernikov was dismissed deep into added time, but the clock ran out on Rubin’s attempt to avoid an eighth defeat in nine RPL games.

Rubin remain 12th on 25 points, while Krasnodar go fifth on 39 points.

Next RPL fixtures: Saturday 16 April - Spartak vs Rubin; Sunday 17 April - Krylia vs Krasnodar
