On 17 August one of the oldest football clubs in Russia – Torpedo Moscow – celebrated its 90-Anniversary. On 17 August 1924 the first match in the history of Torpedo football took place. The team, which was named Proletarskaya Kuznitsa at that time, had the first match for the premiership of Moscow city amond the teams of the 3rd group. The team got the name Torpedo as of 1936.
Three times Torpedo won the gold medals of the USSR Championship, they also won the same number of silver medals, and six times – bronze ones. Seven times Torpedo won the Cup of the country.
During the long period of their practice the team brought up a lot of players, which made a great contribution into the history of the Russian football. Among them were Valentin Ivanov, Victor Maslov, Eduard Streltsov, Valery Voronin, Slava Metreveli, Victor Shustikov, Anzor Kavazashvili, Yury Savichev, Konstantin Zyryanov, Igor Semshov and many others.
In the current season Torpedo made a perfect gift for itself by having been promoted to the Premier League.
