Super Mario saves CSKA from unlikely Ural home defeat

print version

CSKA 1-1 Ural Ekaterinburg

Goals: Bicfalvi (71'); Fernandes (90+1')

Man of the match: Mario Fernandes

A moment of pure magic from Mario Fernandes in added time rescued CSKA Moscow from a first ever defeat to Ural Ekaterinburg on Saturday. Eric Bicfalvi had put Dmitry Parfenov's side ahead with under 20 minutes to go with his own spectacular volley.

The game took a while to light up with very few chances of note in the opening hour. The collective pulses were soon raised when Nikolay Dimitrov beat Igor Akinfeev to the ball only to be heavily clattered by the CSKA keeper.

This spurred the hosts into life. Three minutes later Ilzat Akhmetov spotted Alan Dzagoev lurking unmarked on the edge of the box. Akhmetov's cutback was met by a vicious first-time bullet, drawing the faintest of fingertip saves from Yaroslav Godzyur onto the post.

All the pressure CSKA were starting to pile on was undone by a marvellous moment of inspiration from FC Ural's top goalscorer Erik Bicfalvi. With 18 minutes left, Denis Kulakov advanced unopposed towards CSKA's penalty area before chipping a diagonal cross to Bicfalvi.

The Romanian hit a powerful volley through Akinfeev's tame save. Undeterred, Kristijan Bistrovic curled a 20-yard shot at goal, but Godzyur was equal to it.

With two minutes left the shock result should have been wrapped up by Andrey Egorychev when sent clear through by Dimitrov. With Pavel Pogrebnyak begging for a simple assist, Egorychev went alone but missed.

To compound their frustration, Mario Fernandes' sublime chest and volley dragged an unlikely three points from Ural Ekaterinburg's grasp in added time.

Both sides are in Russian Cup quarter-final action on Wednesday 4 March. FC Ural travel to Shinnik Yaroslavl, while CSKA have derby against Spartak Moscow.

CSKA Moscow: Akinfeev, Fernandes, Vasin, Magnusson, Karpov, Oblyakov (Kuchaev 80'), Dzagoev (Shkurin 73'), Akhmetov (Bistrovic 68'), Vlasic, Sigurdsson, Chalov

Ural Ekaterinburg: Godzyur, Kulakov, Polyakov, Wilusz, Zolotov, Egorychev, Boumal, Kucharczyk, Bicfalvi, Dimitrov (Augustyniak 73'), Panyukov (Pogrebnyak 79')
