RPL matchday 23 highlights: Rostov youth records, another Brazilian double for Zenit

print version

We sum up the results of the first RPL matchday after the restart, which was dedicated to showing gratitude to doctors and medical workers.

33 goals were scored in seven games on matchday 23. It became the highest-scoring matchday this season, and the fourth-highest ever in the RPL. It fell just three goals short of the all-time record of 36 goals on matchday 21 in 2006 and matchday six of the 2012-13 season. The mark can still be beaten: FC Krasnodar vs Dynamo Moscow was postponed to 19 July

It took 14 minutes for Akhmat Grozny to score four uninterrupted goals against Krylia Sovetov. During this time, Vladimir Ilyin made the second double of his RPL career, Denis Glushakov scored his 45th league goal, and Bernard Berisha scored on his 100th RPL appearance. At the Samara Arena, Akhmat notched up their fifth victory of the season.

FC Sochi plundered 10 goals against FC Rostov. Now Vladimir Fedotov's team hold the record for goals scored in a single match, and for the biggest win in RPL history. Previously, these records were held by Zenit, who thrashed both Luch Energiya Vladivostok and Torpedo Moscow 8-1, in August 2014 and October 2008 respectively. The overall total of 11 match goals in Sochi’s groundbreaking win was also the highest in the RPL.

The average age of FC Rostov’s starting lineup was just 17.8 years, which is also a new record for Russian championships. Their whole squad was even younger at 17.2 years old. Previously, the youngest team was named by Tom Tomsk head coach Valery Petrakov on 21 May 2017. That day his team’s average age was 20.9 years as they lost 5-1 to FC Krasnodar.

47 seconds passed between kickoff at the Fisht Olympic Stadium and Roman Romanov's goal past Soslan Dzhanaev. The Rostov midfielder became the youngest goalscorer in the club's history at the age of 17 years, two months and 22 days. In the RPL, only Jano Ananidze at Spartak (17 years and eight days) and CSKA’s Aleksandr Salugin (17 years and 27 days) scored faster than Romanov. He knocked his Sochi opponent Aleksandr Kokorin (17 years, 6 months and 15 days) out of the top three.

Two direct goal contributions were provided by Rubin midfielder Khvicha Kvaratskhelia against Ural Ekaterinburg. The Georgian forward equalised in spectacular fashion before providing an assist for Soltmurad Bakaev. For 19-year-old Kvaratskhelia it was the most productive match in his Russian career, and he was named Man of the Match after the game.

Two brothers stood out with effective actions on one day. Soltmurad Bakaev scored the winner for Rubin against Ural, and Zelimkhan Bakaev, playing for Spartak against Arsenal, laid on an assist for Aleksandr Sobolev. In the RPL, there was a case when brothers playing for different clubs scored goals on the same matchday. On 4 April 2015, Dmitry Kombarov scored for Spartak in the 1-1 draw with Kuban Krasnodar, and the next day Kirill Kombarov got a goal of his own for Torpedo Moscow in their 3-1 win over Arsenal.

Aleksandr Sobolev's goalless RPL streak lasted eight months until the Spartak striker opened the scoring against Arsenal. Before this match, the player last scored on 5 October for Krylia Sovetov with a double against FC Sochi on matchday 12. Thanks to his success in Tula, Sobolev reached 11 goals to catch up with the second highest scorer, Eldor Shomurodov of FC Rostov.

Arsenal forward Evgeny Lutsenko scored his 10th goal of the season against Spartak to match the personal RPL record he set in the 2015/16 season playing for Mordovia Saransk. In that campaign Lutsenko played 27 games, whereas in this one he’s only played 21 so far as he sits fourth in the top scorers’ list.

It’s been 17 years since Zenit scored four goals against CSKA in an RPL match. The previous occasion took place on 28 June 2003, but then the visitors scored one goal at the Petrovsky as Zenit ran out 4-1 winners. The same result was repeated in May 2016, but it was the final of the Russian Cup. This was also the first time ever in Russian football history these two teams had produced a 4-0 scoreline.

Three Brazilians have scored doubles in RPL matches between CSKA and Zenit. Jo (2007) and Hulk (2015, 2016) were joined by Malcom after two goals at the VEB Arena. For the former Barcelona player, this was his first double in Russia and the second in his entire career. The only other example came for Bordeaux on 19 August 2017 in a 3-3 draw against Lyon.

Ufa claimed their first competitive win in 2020. They closed out 2019 with two consecutive RPL victories, and in the spring lost to FC Krasnodar and drew with Zenit and CSKA. Against FC Tambov, who were down to 10 men from the 36th minute, Nikolai Giorgobiani struck the decisive goal in added time. This was the 22-year-old striker’s debut RPL goal after being signed by Vadim Evseev from Chayka.

New Lokomotiv Moscow manager Marko Nikolic has suffered no defeats as manager in his first games in different leagues. This run was continued by the Railwaymen’s victory over FC Orenburg. With Rad, he won the first match of the 2008 Serbian Superliga, with Olimpija he successfully debuted in the Slovenian First League in 2016, and at Videoton, now called Fehervar, he started the Hungarian championship in 2017 with a draw.
