Dzyuba too hot to handle as Russia make it two wins from two

print version

Russia 2-1 Slovenia
2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, Group H
Saturday 27 March, Fisht Olympic Stadium

Goals: Russia - Dzyuba (26, 35); Slovenia - Ilicic (36)

Artem Dzyuba edged closer to Aleksandr Kerzhakov’s all-time Russia record with a first-half double to put the hosts in firm control against Slovenia. The skipper combined with clubmate Daler Kuzyaev to slide home a finish midway through the opening period, before he used his anticipation and strength to hold off two defenders at close quarters and bundle in a second.

Aleksey Miranchuk’s Atalanta teammate Josip Ilicic struck a firm low volley from the edge of the area a minute later to reduce arrears, but Stanislav Cherchesov’s men held on to stay top of Group H.

Later today, Croatia face Cyprus at home, before Slovakia - whom Russia visit next - host Malta.

Next Group H fixtures: Tuesday 30 March - Slovakia vs Russia; Cyprus vs Slovenia
