Matchday 22 Review: Samba centurion, Yazici record, CSKA streak

print version

We have rounded up our favourite stats, figures and landmarks from the Russian Premier Liga Matchday 22 fixtures.

3 - Lokomotiv Moscow continued to show comeback character as once again they earned points from a losing position to beat Akhmat 3-2 - and their new forwards were key. Young Frenchman Wilson Isidor bagged the equaliser, making him the first Lokomotiv player to score in his first three RPL appearances since Ari back in 2017.

4 - Yusuf Yazici has absolutely flown out of the blocks since arriving in the Russian Premier Liga, and has already broken records. After his hattrick in CSKA's 6-1  demolition job against Rubin, the Turkish forward has now become the first ever foreign player to score in each of his first four RPL games for the club.

5 - Gamid Agalarov has finally ended his longest Ufa goal drought since rejoining the club, securing a point after Krasnodar had taken the lead just before the break. Five RPL fixtures without a goal was causing concern, but the RPL leading goalscorer returned to the scoresheet with a vital late penalty.

6 - CSKA were irresistible again this weekend as they smashed six goals past a hapless Rubin Kazan. It was the first time they'd scored six goals in an RPL fixture since 2019, and also extended their winning streak to six league matches - their joint-longest such streak in almost seven years.

9 - Rescuing a point against a side pushing for fourth place was a positive side of Ufa's 1-1 draw against Krasnodar, but it also extended their winless run to nine matches. In fact, they have now gone 14 RPL games with only one RPL victory.

9 - Rostov came within seconds of a famous win against the RPL's second-placed side after Dmitry Poloz's beautifully taken opener, but once again they were undone by indiscipline. Fedor Smolov took the chance to draw Dynamo level from the penalty spot, meaning Rostov have conceded nine penalties this season - more than anyone else.

27 - A frantic five-minute period saw a previously quiet game between Nizhny Novgorod and Spartak Moscow explode into life, culminating in Quincy Promes scoring what he thought was the winner, only for VAR to spot he had double-kicked the ball in his run-up. With that intervention leading to his spot kick being ruled out, it left Spartak once again found wanting, and with a points tally of just 27 after 22 matches - their lowest at this stage of a season since 2003.

101 - There is no questioning the positive Brazilian influence on Zenit St. Petersburg these days after the arrival of Yuri Alberto boosted the Samba nation's numbers to five, evidenced further by all three goalscorers in the 3-0 win over Arsenal Tula being Brazilian (Malcom 2, Alberto). Another was honoured for his lengthy contribution before kick-off, as Douglas Santos was awarded a plaque for completing 100 matches for Zenit last weekend.
