Dmitry Gunko has today been appointed manager of FC Khimki after the club had earlier parted company with Sergey Yuran. Gunko started his coaching career at Spartak Moscow’s academy. He twice led the youth team to the championship. Later, he was a member of Valery Karpin’s staff with the senior team, and he managed the team after his retirement.

He then worked as sporting director of the Spartak academy and headed Spartak-2 for one season, and in June 2018 was appointed academy head coach.

FC Khimki General Director Aleksandr Zaytsev was confident the club’s new manager would be successful. "Dmitry Gunko's candidacy for the post of head coach of Khimki was considered by the club's Supervisory Board in 2015,” said Zaytsev, “but then it was not possible to agree terms. I am glad that five years later Dmitry has come to Khimki. I am sure that he will do everything possible to achieve results."

Dmitry Gunko explained how simple it was for him to accept the offer. "Today I received an offer to lead FC Khimki, which was completely unexpected for me. It would be foolish to turn down an offer to lead a Premier League team. For me, this is a serious challenge that I have accepted. I will give myself completely to my work, I have a lot of ideas, but the most important thing is to develop the players individually and the team as a whole."
