CSKA Moscow 1-0 Nizhny Novgorod
Saturday 5 March, VEB Arena
Goals: CSKA - Yazici 90+6'
Man of the Match: Yusuf Yazici (CSKA)
Sent off: Nizhny Novgorod - Kecskes 42’
Once again Yusuf Yazici stole the show in dramatic fashion, with his late winner saving CSKA from dropping two points.
A visit to in-form CSKA was always likely to be an uphill challenge for Nizhny Novgorod, and it looked to be following the script midway through the first half when Yazici suddenly found himself clean through on goal.
A wayward pass across his defensive line from Viktor Aleksandrov trickled straight into the Turkish midfielder’s path leaving him a clear run at goal, but his low placed shot hit the upright and bounced back out.
On the stroke of half time, things got worse for Aleksandr Kerzhakov’s side as they went down to 10 men, when a slightly late challenge from Akos Kecskes caught Jorge Carrascal and was upgraded from a yellow to a red card after a VAR review.
Somehow, though, the reduced visitors remained level on the scoresheet well into the second period as CSKA struggled to break them down.
With a fraction of added time remaining though, Yazici latched onto a knocked down header to swivel and steer in a vital winner.
CSKA go third on 36 points, while Nizhny Novgorod remain 10th on 22 points.
