Claudinho came closest to breaking the deadlock in the opening period with a trademark free kick. The Brazilian’s effort swept menacingly under the bar, only for Soslan Dzhanaev to pull off a brilliant full-stretch save to deny him.

Artem Dzyuba made a nuisance of himself in the penalty area after being rested from the starting lineup last time out. 

Minutes from the end Douglas Santos made a crucial goalline clearance from a Mateo Cassierra snap shot just three yards out in a desperate scramble, but the champions held out for a useful point.

Sochi stay fourth on 39 points, while Zenit remain top of the table on 49 points.
