Gotsyuk own goal heartbreak hands Dynamo late win

print version

Nizhny Novgorod 0-1 Dynamo Moscow
Saturday 9 April, Nizhny Novgorod Stadium

Goal: Dynamo - Gotsyuk (OG) 87’
Man of the Match: Daniil Fomin (Dynamo)

It would be fair to say Dynamo dominated proceedings in the first half, bossing possession with 71% and taking six shots to Nizhny Novgorod’s two, but they still didn’t score or even manage one shot on target.

Midway through the second period Dynamo had a chance to put their misfiring accuracy right but again fluffed their lines. Sebastian Szymanski saw his close-range shot blocked, but the ball trickled wide towards Denis Makarov who somehow failed to prod the ball home into an unguarded net under pressure from defenders.

After holding out bravely for almost the entire match, disaster struck for the hosts with little over three minutes remaining. Szymanski waited till the ideal moment to release the overlapping Guillermo Varela down the right, with the Uruguayan’s low cross diverted into the top corner by Kirill Gotsyuk’s outstretched leg.

Nizhny Novgorod remain ninth on 27 points, while Dynamo stay second on 49 points.
