Matchday 25 Review: Margasov & Akinfeev landmarks, Isidor equals Yazici streak

print version

We have looked back to bring you our favourite stats and figures from the Russian Premier Liga Matchday 25 fixtures.

1 - Timofey Margasov has enjoyed a fair amount of success in his career, but mostly in a team sense - Russian champion with Lokomotiv, and Russian Cup winner with three different clubs. What he is less known for is personal accolades, specifically scoring. His wonderful strike form distance to open the scoring for Sochi at home to Lokomoyiv was his first ever top-flight goal in his career - and only his second in professional football, after notching for Sibir Novosibirsk over eight years ago in the FNL.

6 - The extraordinary record-breaking battle between Yusuf Yazici and Wilson Isidor to score in consecutive games at the start of their RPL careers took another twist this weekend. Yazici’s run ended at six games after the Turkish attacker finally failed to find the back of the net away to Ufa, but Isidor drew level after he converted a first-half penalty away to Sochi, before adding a second-half header for good measure. Lokomotiv had a fixture postponed earlier in the spring, leaving Isidor on the verge of holding the record by himself if he scores at home to Nizhny Novgorod next weekend.

9 - Margasov’s unexpected spectacular effort also marked another milestone, but for his opponents Lokomotiv. It became the ninth goal the Railroaders have conceded from outside the penalty area this season, more than any other RPL side.

11 - Zenit completed a task most expected them to by maintaining their lead in the RPL table at home to relegation-threatened Ural, but even by their standards the mark they extended was impressive; it was their 11th home against Ural in the top flight, and they have won every single won. No other RPL side has a longer 100% winning home records against another single team.

12 - When you have lost all but one of your last nine league matches, you don’t mind how you earn points as long as you turn around the string of defeats. Rubin Kazan will be happy to come away from Spartak Moscow with a 1-1 draw to ease a slither of pressure, but it does make it their 12th consecutive RPL match without a clean sheet - their longest ever such streak.

19 - Lokomotiv Moscow came within inches of snatching all three points in a pulsating encounter away to Sochi as Vanja Drkusic pulled off a stunning gasoline clearance in the eighth minute of added time. A win would have been all the more remarkable after they’d twice fallen behind, but by picking up a point they made it 19 points won from losing positions, seven more than the next side, further consolidating their position as comeback kings having recovered.

87 - Mario Fernandes doesn’t score all that often - just four times in the last two seasons so faR - but when he does it is usually a crucial, and late, contribution. His goalmouth scramble effort broke the deadlock in the 87th minute against Ufa to hand what he thought was a valuable winner. All of those last four goals have come in the last half-hour of games, three in the last four minutes, and but for Aleksey Nikitin’s dramatic header all would have been winning goals.

700 - Although there wasn’t much cause for CSKA to celebrate dropping two points with the last touch of the match to Aleksey Nikitin’s header, there was an impressive personal landmark for Igor Akinfeev. The legendary keeper - who was robbed of another clean sheet by Ufa’s added-time equaliser - played in his 700th official match for CSKA; 10 in the Russian Super Cup, 47 in the Russian Cup, 133 in European competitions, and 510 in the RPL.
